Where were all the punks at the Met Costume Institute Gala Benefit?

In New York last night, The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted its annual Costume Institute Gala Benefit. The theme celebrated the museum’s upcoming exhibit “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” which opens to the public on May 9. As a result, the attending celebrities — everyone from supermodel Gisele Bündchen to pop star Madonna, actress Anne Hathaway, and the unofficial queen of punk herself designer Vivienne Westwood — took a stab at interpreting the rebellious, anti-establishment movement through their own gala-fashion choices. There were faux-hawks, studded stilettos and even a few safety pins (see: Giovanna Battaglia’s up-do), but as a whole the trends swayed more toward a tame goth look than true, gritty punk. Herewith, a sampling of the rather outrageous style statements made on the red carpet — the good, bad, and the sort-of punk. —Christina Geyer
